Fire Safety: Fire Detection and Equipment to Fight Fires

A fire is a distressing and overwhelming experience. Buildings, hospitals, schools and even people’s lives are lost. The good news is that the outbreak of fires can be prevented. You just need a little time and diligence to be able to protect yourself and your family from this crisis. Being well informed and keeping the correct fire safety equipment in your homes may lessen the damage a fire can make before the local fire department arrives.

Nowadays, a variety of fire detection and warning systems are available. There are two main kinds of fire detection. The first one is the heat detectors which are used primarily to trigger sprinkler systems. There are also the smoke detectors which are becoming more popular in recent years. This type is inexpensive and very reliable. They are often connected to a remote system to a central point.

Fire extinguishers are considered the first line of defense in the occurrence of a fire breakout. There are many kinds of extinguishers in the market today which are used for different purposes. They are either portable or fixed. Fixed extinguishers are usually built-in and included in an over all central system with sprinklers. Portable extinguishers are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are categorized according to the class of fire they are able to put out. For instance, an electrical fire extinguisher is used for Class C fires. This is specifically used for fires caused by faulty wirings, overloaded circuits and extension cords, improper plugs, switches and outlets, and poor maintenance of lighting.

Accidents in roads and highways involving cars are not uncommon anymore. A small fire can ignite due to a variety of causes. Some of these are inadequate fuel line materials that are easily broken causing fuel leaks, defective fuel filler necks, and fuel lines without safety valves to prevent rapid siphoning of diesel in a crash. In cases like these, it is important you have a car fire extinguisher under the dash of the car next to the door to prevent the fire from igniting into larger flames.

There are many fire fighting equipment that help fight fires but does not necessarily extinguish it. One tool is a portable ladder. It is very useful in reaching windows or the roof area of a house. Axes can also be handy in opening wider firebreaks in case a person is trapped inside a burning house or building.

A fire blanket is a safety device used for small fires which is also a must for your home. These blankets can put out a small contained fire before it has a chance to get bigger. It is made of a non-flammable material and is very useful in fires which cannot be put out by water. These may include electrical fires and fires in the kitchen.

Keeping these fire safety products in your home can be the significant difference in saving a life. It is essential that you are knowledgeable and equipped with the basic fire fighting techniques and tools to prepare yourself in a fire emergency.
